“A growing fear is enveloping our elderly population and this is borne out in today’s HSE report on elder abuse. It is also witnessed anecdotally by our carers who visit thousands of older people daily in their homes across the country.”
Eddie O’Toole, Operations Director of Bluebird Care was speaking following today’s report from the HSE which shows that more than one in five of all 1,850 reports of elder abuse made in the first eight months of 2012 related to financial deception.
Eddie O’Toole says the HSE report on Elder Abuse today reaffirms the responsibility on all of us to take a ‘community approach’ to older people living around us. “This report comes on the back on a dangerous spate of burglaries targeting older people in their homes and marks a very worrying time for them.”
Bluebird Care who work with older people on a daily basis across 23 counties, say they are very aware of the anecdotal evidence of growing fear among older people. With this in mind they are hosting a nationwide series of Security Seminars starting next month in communities across Ireland. The events will be held in local venues from February until October 2013. The first one to be held in Co. Donegal.
