My i-CARE story begins with ‘I’ but along the way there was a lot of help from ‘you’, ‘they’ and ‘them’ and now it really is a case of a ‘WE’ care story – so this is how it all began.
I won’t lie – I had no clue at school, college or into my early thirties what I wanted to be. My destiny wasn’t calling to me, I had no great passion or desire to be fulfilled. I just hoped it would fall into my lap one day! I’ve worked in insurance, as an animal groomer, in a bakers, in the bank – but every few years my soul whispered to me that this wasn’t what I was here for, to move on, to try again.
My feeling of wanting to work in a place where I made a difference; that had meaning always lingered in the back of my mind. I wanted to enjoy my work and to bring enjoyment to those I worked with.
We are all born into the same world the same way and we should all be entitled to the same treatment, regardless of their race, religion, sexuality or disability. Yes, some are more fortunate than others but this doesn’t entitle them to extra privileges – we are all equal and nothing made me realise this as much as when I started working with Bluebird Care.
It came about after a dear friend was in a fatal car accident where both her parents died and she was left learning to walk again in her twenties. Ironically she is a school teacher and she had to rely on being taught to do the simplest things again. She didn’t give up, not for a second and her strength both physically and mentally made me feel helpless.
I wanted to help but I didn’t know how – so I learned how to. I enrolled as a mature student for the Fetac Level 5 Healthcare course and every evening after work I went to college or completed assignments in between work experience placements. I fell in love. I had finally found my vocation – in the healthcare industry.
After completing the course and surpassing all my expectations exam-wise, I applied for a job with Bluebird Care and upon being successful at interview level began employment with them. At first, I was unsure of myself and second -guessed things I was doing, but I was just finding my footing. In my heart I knew what I was doing was correct. I just needed that bit of reassurance and that is always reinforced by Bluebird Care – that and their continuing support is what has moulded me into the carer I am today.
I know they are at the other end of the phone if I need them. I know that if I have a problem or need to talk, Bluebird Care is there to support and encourage me and I can truthfully say that I love to care because Bluebird Care have given me the opportunity to do so.
In the last two years I have developed the skills I need to care for a variety of clients and I have exceeded all my own personal goals. I hope to set the goalposts further apart as my career with Bluebird Care continues to flourish in the future. I have been fortunate enough to grow on this journey with Bluebird Care and we will continue to grow together; continuing to provide excellent care to all those who are in need. And who knows, there may come a time when maybe I need that care so I am mindful of just how important it is to know that there are people out there that love to care as much as me.
