Bluebird Care’s recent Training workshops in Kilkenny and Waterford covering Disability Awarenss and Mental Health received excellent feedback from all Care Staff who attended. Brian Egan Managing Director said ‘we ran these training sessions last year and felt it made sense to run them again as part of our continuous training program. The training was done by Disability Consultancy Services and all the topics covered should hopefully be of benefit to the carers in their work’
Brian added ‘ we are now already planning our next training which will cover important areas such as Palliative Care, further training on Elder Abuse and an overview on record keeping and Documentation’
We are providing care for people of all ages and with a range of different needs throughout Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford so having experienced and trained care staff is so important’.

Bluebird Care is delighted to announce the appointment of our new Medical Director, Professor Stephen Lane FRCPI, FRCP (London), FCCP, Ph.D..

Professor Lane is Consultant Respiratory and General Physician at Tallaght Hospital (appointed 1998), Peamount Hospital (appointed 2004), and Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Trinity College Dublin (appointed 2008). He qualified in UCD in 1984 and underwent postgraduate medical training in Dublin (Mater Hospital) & London (Guy’s & St. Thomas’) teaching hospitals. His main research interest is bronchial asthma. He was awarded a PhD in Medicine for original research on this topic by the University of London in 1994 and is widely published in peer review journals. He runs an active clinical, teaching and research unit which spans his hospital and University appointments. He is a Fellow of the Irish & UK (London) College of Physicians and of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Professor Lane has a vast experience and interest in the management of acute medical patients presenting to hospital emergency departments. He has provided medical consultant ‘on-call’ cover for these patients for his entire consultant career to date and so is fully conversant with the problems faced by patients in terms of both access and subsequent successful supported discharge back to their communities. He has been instrumental in the setting up of such a supported discharge programme that operates between Tallaght and Peamount Hospitals for patients with severe lung disease who are heavily dependent upon hospital services. He has also been closely involved in other such supported discharge initiatives such as outreach programmes for patients with chronic lung disease (COPD) and community intervention schemes allowing for the use of a home-based, as opposed to a hospital-based, IV service.

Professor Lane is fully aware that a successful home discharge relates not only medical issues. Critical to a successful discharge is a supportive environment of carers who can assist the patient in critical activities of daily living so allowing for a steady convalescence to independent living. Unfortunately, in a modern displaced society, not everyone can call upon ready family support during this critical period. Professor Lane and Bluebird Care seek to address this critical vacuum of care in order to support an early successful discharge and so improve patient flow from hospital to Home Care or Community Care.
