High-quality, home care services to people of all ages in their own homes is the speciality of the Carlow and Kilkenny branch of Bluebird Care.
We provide a wide range of home care services that are responsive and flexible to a person’s needs. Our services involve everything from:
- assistance with personal care needs
- help getting up or going to bed
- preparation of meals
- home help tasks
- taking people to hospital appointments and assistance with medication
- companionship and help with social activities.
We work closely with clients to work out a care plan, carrying out a risk assessment beforehand. We certainly do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach and we create individualised care plans that detail all the care and support needs of our clients. These individualised plans are used as the guide for our staff who provide the services.
We recognise the importance of continuity and a regular routine so we always use the same staff members to provide services to our clients to allow for the development of great relationships between staff members and clients. Our care workers are supported by a nurse manager.
We also review the care we provide on a regular basis through communications with clients and their families, as circumstances can change and we are always willing to change our processes if certain approaches do not work.
Our client base is very varied – from children to young and older adults with various disabilities and care needs

What about dementia care?
We provide dementia care to many clients. We recognise this as a specialised area of care and that detailed risk assessments and care plans are needed before we can start up these care packages.
We work closely with families to decide how a care plan will work and, with the help of family and loved ones we get to know our clients, creating a picture of their lives and ensuring we base our care plan around their likes, dislikes and habits.
What qualifications do our staff have?
Our nurse managers are qualified nurses, and all of our care staff have a healthcare qualification which is a minimum of a Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC/QQI Level 5) in healthcare, while others have degrees in social care and other relevant subjects.
We support our staff with further in-house training such as:
- Abuse for vulnerable clients Training
- Child Protection
- Dementia Training
- Induction training
- Manual handling & patient moving
- Crisis prevention intervention (CPI)
- Medication management
- Tracheostomy care training
- Peg training
Our in-house training specialists include our care manager, who is a manual handling & patient moving instructor, our supervisor, a qualified medication management practitioner and another supervisor who is a trained CPI instructor.
We also provide other training through other recognised training providers and we offer all of our staff a continuous professional development e-training programme.

Brian as Managing Director is committed to ensuring that Bluebird Care provide a high standard of service for everyone we work with.
Brian previously worked in financial services. He gained substantial expertise over 11 years in Finance related roles as well as experience in Staff Management and Client relationships Management. These areas continue be a large part of his role as Managing Director of Bluebird Care Carlow/Kilkenny and Waterford.
Brian stepped away from the Finance Sector and opened the Bluebird Care office for the Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford Area in 2010. As a local person, Brian’s vision was to set out and provide a service to an extremely high standard and ensure that anyone who Bluebird Care support will really see the benefit of the service provided.

Eric is a Chartered Accountant and has worked with a variety of businesses throughout his career. He has spent over ten years working at senior management level, gaining valuable experience managing staff and client relationships. As Director, Eric has input across all functions of the business to help ensure the Company continues to provide care of the highest professional standards to its clients.

Liz is a qualified Nurse (RGN) with extensive experience in care both in the private and public sector. Liz worked in the Community for the HSE and has substantial experience in delivery of Care and Management in residential settings.
Liz joined the Bluebird Care Team in June 2011 and enjoys her role in managing the care team; recruiting and training staff, undertaking customer assessments, assisting in the day-to-day running of the office, and communicating with customers and other healthcare professionals.
Liz is a key point of contact for the HSE in particular the Directors of Public Health Nursing. Liz is a Qualified Manual Handling and Patient Moving Instructor which she uses to provide guidance for staff in these areas to supplement the Certificates they have already acquired. Liz along with all the Bluebird Care team strives to achieve the highest standards of Care on a daily basis.
Luan Lyons is a qualified nurse (RGN) with strong experience working in Care in the community, hospital and residential settings.
Luan joined the Bluebird Care Team in February 2012. In the role of Assistant Care Manager she ensures care plans are reviewed and updated as required, and that standards are constantly maintained by the care workers and personal assistants, each day supporting and supervising staff while they provide care and support services to our customers.
Luan is a Qualified Medication Management Practitioner and uses this Qualification to ensure Bluebird Care gives clear guidance in the area of medication management to our clients.
Luan prides herself on delivering high standards and ensuring that all our staff provide services to these same standards.
AnnMarie is an experienced professional in office administration.
She manages the rostering of staff through our bespoke roster software and also manages many of the administration functions within the office. AnnMarie is also the key person at the end of the phone and is always ready to deal with client and staff queries in an efficient manner.
AnnMarie also shares the Bluebird Care passion for high standards of Care and this comes from her own family experience in caring for a loved one.
Mary O’Brien is a qualified Intellectual Disability Nurse (RNID) and received her qualification from Waterford Institute of Technology.
Mary provides support to the Office Nurse Managers and also provides hands on Nursing Support to various clients in the community. She will be based in our Carlow/Kilkenny office in Ayrfield Medical Park but will also spend time travelling to clients at home.
Mary will also be available to support our Carers and Personal Assistants and will link in with Healthcare Professionals throughout Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford.
Mary is passionate about ensuring a high standard of care is delivered and that a professional service is received by all clients.
Jackie Nolan joined Bluebird Care in 2010 as a Care Assistant.
Jackie has provided care & support for numerous clients with different needs ranging from personal care to mobility issues to specialist Care for Dementia clients. Jackie’s high standards and professional approach led to her promotion to Care Supervisor in 2013 where Jackie supports our Carers and clients through Supervisions and reviews.
Jackie also manages our Bluebird Proof of Delivery system. Jackie is a qualified CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) Instructor and gives this course to our staff to benefit them when working in areas of challenging behaviours
Gillian is a care professional with significant experience in the care industry in areas such as residential childcare, early childhood care, aftercare development, outreach support, domestic violence and working with the elderly. She also has significant experience in the area of administration and clerical work which lends itself very well to her role as Care Coordination Team Leader for Bluebird Care.
Gillian holds a degree in Applied Social Studies from Cork IT as well as a range of other Care related qualifications including a Diploma in Multi Element Behavioral Support. Gillian also possesses qualifications in office administration. To compliment this Gillian is a qualified trainer (QQI Level 6).
As one of our Care Coordinators Gillian is at the end of the phone in Bluebird Care to ensure our clients, staff and other partners such as the HSE and other healthcare professionals receive an efficient and professional service.
Gillian manages our staff planning and roster process and liaises with our clients on a daily basis. Gillian is a key support for our staff and clients and prides herself on working to high standards which in turn leads to high standards in the provision of care and support services to those that we work with.
