Xposé’s Kathleen Leahy Celebrates ‘Paw’sitive Ageing Week

TV3’s newest Xposé presenter Kathleen Leahy dropped into Dogs Trust to show her support for PAW – Positive Aging Week this week, which runs from the 28th September to the 6th October.  Kathleen, 67, from Co. Westmeath, is swapping retirement for the Xposé mic and will take to the red carpet to interview some of the biggest names in the celebrity world.

Kathleen is a huge supporter of Positive Ageing Week and its ethos; which is to dispel the many negative perceptions that surround ageing and to transform attitudes towards ageing and older people. We need to celebrate the fact that we are living longer, that ageing is not a burden but an opportunity.

Kathrina Bentley, Head of Marketing at Dogs Trust says “We were delighted that Kathleen was able to join us in celebrating ‘Pawsitive Aging Week’ here too in Dogs Trust. She is full of energy, joy and positivity!”   Kathleen Leahy said “I just fell in love with all the doggies, especially Myrtle; she’s eight years old and just adores being fussed over and getting loads of cuddles and kisses!’

Kathrina added “We have some really amazing golden oldies here in the centre who at this stage of their lives deserve to put their paws up and enjoy their twilight years. We would love to see them going to their forever homes before the winter sets in and be in front of the fire in time for Santa!”

The Art of Active Ageing

Positive Ageing Week, the country’s largest celebration of active and positive ageing is in full swing with ages 3 to 93 teaming up this week to enjoy hundreds of events nationwide.

Organised by Age Action and proudly supported by Bluebird Care this year’s festival marks its 10th anniversary with the biggest celebration yet. An estimated 1,250 events are expected to take place across the country with the 15 Positive Ageing Week towns of Arklow; Athy; Ballymun; Boyle; Cashel; Drogheda; Dublin; Dundalk; Dungarvan; Galway; Kinsale; Midleton; Sligo; Trim; and Tullamore hosting a variety of week long events from now until October 6.

Positive Ageing Week began in 2002 when Age Action decided to mark the United Nations International Day of Older People, October 1 with a small event. A decade to this day, it has since grown and grown, and is now a key part of the national calendar.

The purpose of the week is to show that ageing is not something to fear, but something to celebrate,” Age Action chief executive Robin Webster explained. “It is an opportunity for older people to enjoy themselves and for communities to recognise the contribution which older people have made, and continue to make, in their localities. Older people play key roles in our communities as volunteers, parents and grandparents and experienced workers.”

Bluebird Care’s Director of Operations Eddie O’Toole says, “It is wonderful to be at the heart of a national celebration and to help recognise the invaluable role which older people play in our communities.”

With everything from OAP Olympics, coffee mornings, walks and sporting activities, seminars and demonstrations, art and zumba classes and much, much more it promises to be an action packed week with something for everyone to enjoy.

So get involved, join in to celebrate active ageing and help make Ireland the best place to grow old.
