Bluebird Care Ireland join forces with Debra Ireland to bring some Christmas Cheer to families living with EB.
While most of us will enjoy the lead up to Christmas, and we look forward to spending time with family and friends, it can also be a time of great expense. Families with a child with EB face increased financial pressure and reduced family time due to the demands that arise from EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa).
To assist with this, Bluebird Care Ireland has joined forces with DEBRA Ireland via the donation of a €5000 grant that will provide immediate financial support to families easing this pressure and help make their Christmas unforgettable.
EB is an incredibly painful genetic skin condition which makes skin as fragile as the wings of a butterfly. This is why children with EB are often know as butterfly children. An estimated 1 in 18,000 babies born in Ireland are affected by EB. There is no cure and treatment consists of an arduous bandaging process which can take up to four hours every second day. This is incredibly painful for the child and heart-breaking for the parent.
DEBRA Ireland is a national Irish charity, established to provide support services to patients and families living with the debilitating skin condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB). DEBRA Ireland have two main focuses – Care and Cure. ‘Care’ is about providing the best level care in the patient’s own home while ‘Cure’ refers to funding research to create better treatments as well as ultimately finding a cure for EB.
“Due to the nature of EB, the severity and complexity of the condition, oftentimes there are unexpected complications. These complications or sudden changes in the patient’s ability has an impact on the whole family unit. With finances being the leading cause of stress in any relationship, this is one area where Bluebird Care Ireland could intervene and support our families”, said Claire Concannon, corporate fundraising manager for DEBRA Ireland.
“Christmas should be a time to create fun family memories which will get you through the hard days and this extra treat from Bluebird Care Ireland will allow families to have a very Merry Christmas! We really cannot thank Bluebird Care Ireland enough for their kindness and generosity.”
Claudia Collins and Liz Collins
Bluebird Care was set up in Ireland in 2007, and with 26 offices nationwide are now one of Irelands leading health and social care providers.
Bluebird Care Managing Director met Liz Collins who’s daughter Claudia has EB and was deeply moved on hearing the many challenges families have to face when living with EB.
“Whilst the majority of our clients require care of the older person services we are finding ourselves working more and more with young children who have complex care needs. We see first-hand the pressure that this can put on families physically, emotionally and financially.”
“Christmas can be stressful at the best of time and we were delighted to be able to provide immediate financial assistance to the many families this grant will support over the holiday period”.
