Director of Bluebird Care Meath, Gavin Kane says Carers are a group of people who deserve recognition, given the invaluable work they do.

“It is important to reiterate that, although only some of the carers have won awards, in our eyes, all of our carers are winners. Carers do a vital job and these awards help raise their profile and awareness of the amazing work these people do, often in extremely challenging circumstances.”

Spirit of Bluebird Care Award: This award goes to Mary Halpin. Mary was nominated for the award by her colleagues and senior management because of her outstanding dedication to a particular customer. Mary was one of first carers to undergo specific training to allow this customer leave hospital and be in the comfort of his own home. As the customer progressed, Mary showed her outstanding dedication by traveling to college in Dublin to maintain his continuity of care while the customer settles into his new surroundings. Mary was, and still is, instrumental to this customer and helped the customer reach his goals.  The Spirit of Bluebird Care Award recognises the dedication that Mary provides to her customer day in day out.

Carer of the Year Award: This award goes to Jackie McGovern. Jackie was nominated for the award by her colleagues and senior management because of her outstanding dedication to her job, her attitude to the role and considering her popularity with her customers. We are delighted to honour Jackie’s professionalism, dedication and commitment, a very deserving recipient of this award. Her fellow carers have all commented on how she brings out the best in other carers. She is truly an asset to the Bluebird Care Meath team and it is her great initiative and attention to detail that singles her out.”

The issues debated included healthcare provision, Budget 2014, homecare, home security and social isolation.

Speakers included Sgt. Tony Davis, Prof Cillian Twomey, Senator Deirdre Clune, Robin Webster, Age Action, Sean Moynihan Alone and Peter Kavanagh Active Retirement Ireland, Don O’Riordan, Director Bluebird Care Cork and Susie Hall, Alliance of Retired Public Service Associations.

Operations Director with Bluebird Care Eddie O’Toole says they have now had over 500 people engage on issues affecting older people in modern Ireland.  “There is a lot of frustration and anxiety out there among older people who feel their voice is not being heard by Government, state agencies and decision makers. These events offer a platform for older people to share their views and opinions with up to 10 panel members from a range of experts and organisations contributing. They have proven hugely popular and so it’s something we will continue to roll out in 2014.”

The final “An EngAGEment with Bluebird Care” event takes place on Tuesday 12th November in the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny. To reserve your FREE place email brianegan@localhost/bluebird.
