“My swing needs improving but apart from that, there aren’t enough hours in the day. Growing old is a virtue and I’m making the most of it.”

Mai Quaid (73) from Baltinglass in Co. Wicklow and President of Active Retirement Ireland was practicing her golf swing at the launch of the 2014 Irish Pensioners Handbook.

She was joined by Arthur Dempsey (75), a former rugby player with Wanderers and Palmerston Clubs in South Dublin who now coaches first and second years at Wilson’s Hospital School in Multyfarnham Co. Westmeath.

Mai says the Irish Pensioners Handbook is an invaluable resource. “We are living longer, we are healthier and we are more active than ever so it’s great to see a publication that provides expert advice on key issues and a broad range of ideas for keeping active. And it’s free which is important. Our members from our 550 local Active Retirement groups will certainly be picking up a copy.”

The handbook is produced by Homecare company Bluebird Care, who will distribute it around the country throughout their 24 local offices, with contributions from Active Retirement Ireland, Age Action and the social housing association RESPOND!

Writing in the Irish Pensioners Handbook Kathleen Lynch, Minister of State with responsibility for Older People says the Government is committed to ensuring older people are supported and enabled to lead full and independent lives. The National Positive Ageing Strategy published in April 2013 outlines Ireland’s vision for ageing and older people and the national goals and objectives required to promote positive ageing. It will be the blueprint for age related policy and service delivery across Government in the years ahead.”

Eddie O’Toole, Operations Director with Bluebird Care says, “Part of our commitment to older people is to share information and advice on issues of interest to them hence our involvement in the Irish Pensioners Handbook. We value care in the same way we understand the premise, ‘some day I will have to ask for help. Maybe not today, but some day’.”

A second print-run to meet demand marks the launch of the 5th annual Irish Pensioners Handbook.

The free publication, which contains over 200 pages of helpful hints, tips, articles and local directories for older people and carers, is now available from Bluebird Care offices nationwide.

“It’s a great coffee table read, but more than that it’s a handbook of helpful hints and tips with practical information and a great directory. I’m hooked and others will too when they get their hands on it. Information is vital for older people and carers. I’m in the business of broadcasting so I know this.” says Newstalk’s George Hook who this week launched the Irish Pensioners Handbook.

In her foreword, Kathleen Lynch, Minister of State, Department of Health with responsibility for Disability, Older People, Equality and Mental Health says:

“I am delighted to see that this year marks the fifth edition of the Irish Pensioners Handbook, which by now is a well proven resource for pensioners, their families and many health care professionals.

The increasing number of people over age 65 will inevitably pose further challenges not only for our health and social care services, but for society as a whole. These challenges equally contain great opportunities, if we only have the foresight and courage to grasp them. As Minister with responsibility for Older People, I am keenly aware of the importance of “positive ageing” for our collective future. The Government is therefore progressing the new National Positive Ageing Strategy, to better inform on a wide front policies and service developments for older people in Ireland.”

We have also uploaded the electronic version on our website so it’s there at the touch of a button. But we also printed an extra 10,000 to meet growing demand and with just one call to our office we will post you out a copy. The articles we commissioned are based on the information older people and carers are looking for from our staff, so we decided to ask a number of medical, financial and health experts to contribute to it.”

General Manager of Bluebird Care Limerick, Daragh McGlynn presented Councillors with their copy along with copies for their respective clinics.

“The handbooks are free and are of great value to carers and older people. With over 200 pages of expert advice on health, wealth, travel, support and a real focus this year on active ageing. Bluebird Care has also commissioned a series of expert articles which are proving popular.

The Handbook has been distributed nationwide to nursing homes, GP surgeries, pharmacies, citizen’s information and active retirement groups and throughout the Bluebird Care network comprising 18 offices in 23 counties.

And it seems that the demand in Limerick is reflected nationwide. Daragh McGlynn says, “We are experiencing overwhelming demand for the Handbook so much so we have ordered another print run.”

The Handbook contains articles from George Hook on Travel, Award winning Chef Gary O’Hanlon on Food for the Soul, Wellesley on Finance, An Garda Síochána on Home Security, Irene Collins of EIQA on Choosing a Homecare Provider, Professor of GP Practice in Trinity College Dublin, Tom O’Dowd on Living with Chronic Illness and Bluebird Care Ireland General Manager and Registered Nurse Lorna Liney on taking medication.

The Handbook also contains a comprehensive county-by-county directory of hospitals, local authorities, support groups, charities and state agencies.
