Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Care

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 100,000 people in the UK, making it the most common disease that affects the central nervous system.

Learning that you have Multiple Sclerosis is likely to come as a shock. You may feel isolated, afraid, or even angry. Everyone reacts differently.

At Bluebird Care, we understand the profound impact of an MS diagnosis and the life-changing adjustments you will need to make to manage the condition.

We offer Multiple Sclerosis care tailored to your unique needs, as well as support to help you and your family through the difficult times.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis is a condition that affects your brain and spinal cord, causing problems with mobility, vision, and balance.

Falling under the category of autoimmune diseases, MS causes the brain to mistakenly attack the myelin sheath that protects the nerve fibres, disrupting or preventing messages being sent along your nervous system.

Common Symptoms of MS

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis can vary from person-to-person, depending on which nerves are affected and the extent of the damage. Typical symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Dizzy spells
  • Loss of balance
  • Muscle spasms
  • Numbness
  • Difficultly swallowing
  • Difficulty moving arms and legs
  • Bowel and bladder problems
  • Double vison or loss of vision
  • Memory issues
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Sexual dysfunction

Symptoms of MS can fluctuate. Some people will experience symptoms regularly, while others may be symptomatic for a short period before being symptom free for months, or even years.

Typically, symptoms worsen over times as the affected nerves deteriorate.

Multiple Sclerosis Support at Home Stay

Treatment for MS focuses on slowing the progression of the disease and managing symptoms as they occur through medications, therapies, and lifestyle changes.

MS can be an extremely challenging condition to live with, so we strive to offer compassionate support with day-to-day symptoms as well as improving your quality of life.

At Bluebird Care, we provide experienced staff who help manage your condition in your own home. We work with you to develop a MS care plan, tailored to your specific needs. This might include:

  • Managing or administering medications
  • Supporting with bathing and dressing
  • Help with toileting, including catheter and continence management
  • Establishing a regular exercise routine to improve mood and mobility
  • Dietary support
  • Assistance with household chores
